Dr Devina Patel
Herts Mind Matters
A psychological assessment and intervention service for young people (aged 16+) and adults.
I have been a qualified Clinical Psychologist since 2015 and have over 14 years experience working in mental health with clients from across the lifespan. I graduated with a BSc Psychology degree and an MSc degree in Research in Cognitive Neuropsychology, from University of Hertfordshire.
Most of my career, post qualification, has been spent working in the NHS with children, adolescents, families and schools within Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). More recently I have gained valuable experience supporting students within a higher education setting.
My doctoral level clinical training and experience post qualification mean that I am able to offer integrative therapy that enables me to draw on a range of therapeutic approaches to help tailor the therapy to your individual needs. The main therapeutic models that I draw on include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Therapy for trauma and other third wave therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). I am collaborative in my approach and aim to help you to develop emotional resilience and discover a healthier future direction.
I like to hold equal light to past and present experiences. Whilst it is important to explore and understand how past experiences affect how we feel and cope in the present moment, working in the here and now is equally as important, as I believe, this is where the scope for changing your future lies. I would help you to recognise patterns between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are maintaining your current position. I aim to empower you with strategies to help yourself become unstuck and see the world through different lenses, enabling new solutions and possibilities.
A natural human response to distress is to avoid anything too painful. We have all been there, whether it be denying there is a problem or running away from the problem. One of the aims of our therapeutic journey would be to stop running or denying and beginning to unpack and explore the avoided thoughts and feelings in a safe and containing environment. This process can promote psychological healing and help you develop skills in both tolerating and coping with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings enabling you to function better and live a more fulfilling life.
Being brought up in the UK and coming from an Indian descent I have a sound understanding of some of pressures and conflicts that can arise when living within multiple cultures. I have experience working with a broad range ethnic minority groups and am keen to improve accessibility among ethnic minority groups. I believe providing a safe, non-judgmental space for people to express and explore is key to creating positive change for how our future generations manage their emotions.
