What is meant by an allergy?
An allergy is a reaction the body has to a particular food or substance. In the case of severe lifelong allergies causing anaphylactic shock it is best to avoid the substance.
However, many allergies are more sensitivities or intolerances that are learned later in life.
- you may have had the experience of eating bad food and even the thought of eating that food again makes you feel sick.
- Or you are walking through the park and you receive an upsetting phone call. After that day, your eyes water in the presence of cut grass, or pollen or dogs – whatever was in your environment at that time.
- Or maybe you are eating as you cross the road. Suddenly you notice a car speeding towards you. Your stress response kicks in as you run across the road to safety. Your body mistakenly thinks that the food you were eating was the cause of the stress reaction and wrongly identifies the substance as a danger. When you eat it in future, it wages an immune attack to destroy the substance, causing the symptoms.
Since these reactions have been learned, it is possible to unlearn them and be able to eat or be in the presence of these substances without having a reaction.
